Everyone has heard of the classic Cinderella story. A young woman used as a house cleaner for her evil stepmother and stepsisters is given a chance to go to a ball and ends up falling in love with the renowned prince. Even though this well-known fairytale has become like a part of storytelling history, recently another brand-new version has been released. The Cinderella remake has had many mixed reviews. Some say the movie is witty and has some good comedic moments, however, some disagree and say the new pop music version can never compare to the original.

The costume design was very advanced and matched the personality of the characters. The costumes design tied in especially well with the special effects that the “fairy godmother” used. Not only were the clothes fitting the characters’ personalities, but they also reflected the time the story was taking place well.

The props used to film with, however, did not represent the time and location the story took place in. Many of the items used were modern and similar to what one would see in an IKEA display or even in their own homes. The set was beautiful but not like the original version of the movie whatsoever.

The main part of the movie was the random sprees of singing and dancing, making the movie more like a musical than a movie production. The soundtrack seemed slightly repetitive but did work well with the choreography of the dancers and background characters. These elements made the movie more upbeat and emotional when projecting the plot and kept the audience’s attention.

When reviewing a movie, acting is a big deciding factor to whether the movie is enjoyable and expresses character portrayal well. In the modern Cinderella movie, Camilla Cabello, a well-known singer/songwriter plays the main character of the new modernized Cinderella. Her vocal skills carried a lot of the movie’s musical quality and is what drew a lot of people to watch the movie in the first place. Her acting was hard to read at some points along with some of the other actors, but the musical aspect was mood lifting and emotional.

When discussing the special effects and the animated characters, one could say that it was extremely simple to spot what parts of the movie were edited and which were computer-made. The three mice seemed too defined and seemed out of place on the set.

In a nutshell, the new Cinderella movie had a lot of expectations to live up to, but in the end, it was not terrible and had some good costume designs, music, and adrenaline. The performance of actors and special effects could use some work, but otherwise it was not a letdown compared to the older original Cinderella version.
