A common legend in most theaters history is a ghost, and Steinbrenner is no different. Our theater cast are sure that ghosts are haunting the auditorium.
As with most tales, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly who these beings are, where they came from, or what they really look like. The ages range from a middle-aged woman, a bride-to-be, and a child. Some students say there are four ghosts, others say six. However, what most theater students can seem to agree on is that there is more than one.
“I was in the wings of the backstage, and one tickled me in the side. I first thought it was one of my friends. So I turned around, but there was no one there. Half the cast was on stage and the other half was changing. I walked around because I was sure it was somebody, but no one knew what I was talking about,” said Senior Gabriela Johnson.
Many students have said that they have experienced the ghosts’ presence, but saw no one near them. The instances have ranged from a couple of years ago, to a few months ago. However, the ghosts seem to appear primarily when performances by Steinbrenner students occur, such as The Threepenny Opera.
“A few years ago, in 2014, we were doing our show, and I was backstage. It was really dark and felt this huge gust of air from behind me,” said Senior Samantha Kennit. “I looked back thinking it was the door closing to the dressing room, but nobody was coming out. I checked the AC, but that was barely blowing. I’m sure that was the ghost.”
The main ghosts that are seen are “The Woman in Black” and “The White Glow”. These two specters are known to hang around above the stage, wander by the tech booth, the prop room, or even in the audience. Students have reported that there is sometimes a black figure in the curtains.
“During The Threepenny Opera, I was in the girl’s dressing room,” said Senior Mackenzie Franks. “There wasn’t anybody else in there and it was kind of dark. I had school the next day, so I was working on my homework. Then, out of absolutely nowhere, the room gets really cold and a tall stack of scripts just fell to the ground. I walked out of the dressing room but I kept feeling cold, that there was something over my shoulder. That whole thing freaked me out so much.”
One thing we know for certain is that there is a strong possibility that something is lurking in the auditorium. Whether it’s a woman in black, a small child, or an undead actress desperate for one more show, something could be haunting the theater.
