Homecoming traditions are different for every school. At Steinbrenner High School, they celebrate with a spirit week, where every day has a different theme that students can dress up for.

This year’s themes are Grease vs. Greece, Tunes Day, Wordy Wednesday, Walt Disney Day, and Frightening Friday. Based on past and current trends, predictions can be made for what costumes will be popular this year.

On Grease versus Greece day, students were allowed to dress up like a character from the movie Grease or go back in time and dress as someone from Ancient Greece. We can expect to see lots of people in homemade togas, out of just a white bedsheet.

On the other side of the spectrum, there will be an abundance of people dressed as Greasers, characters from the play. We will see lots of people dressed in white tees, blue jeans, a black leather jacket, and gelled back hair to complete the look.

For Tunes Day, students were instructed to dress as their favorite music genre or artist. Many teenagers enjoy listening to rap, however, there are few costumes that can represent that. As a result, it seems that many people will just wear a shirt for their favorite band or artist.

Wordy Wednesday is a themed day where students get to dress up as anything starting with the first letter of their name. It is hard to say exactly what will be popular, but we can count on seeing many creative costumes, as well as hilarious plays on words.

The theme for Thursday, October 28th is to come to school in a costume of their favorite Disney character. In previous Halloween seasons, the dynamic duo of Lilo and Stitch was a popular ensemble. Similarly, the characters Sully and Boo from the Pixar movie ‘Monsters Inc.’, were common costumes from Halloween 2018, and they may be making an appearance again.

Lastly, the Friday before the Homecoming dance is Frightening Friday. Schoolwide, there will be teachers, faculty, and students dressed up in typical Halloween attire. We can count on seeing the group costume staples, such as M&Ms or Powerpuff Girls, along with some of the more random attire like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It can also be expected to see the occasional black cat, witch, or Harley Quinn. With newly released movies such as Black Widow and Cruella, it would come as no surprise if there were people dressed up as those characters.

Overall, I think the spirit week will allow students to have fun and express themselves in a creative way while also showing their school pride. The spirit week will also give students a chance to decide what they will dress up as for Halloween.
