On Sept. 6, the much anticipated sequel to Bungie’s hit first person shooter game, “Destiny” was made available for Xbox One and PS4. “Destiny 2” is similar to the original, a science fiction game that takes players across the universe as one of three Guardians of Earth’s Last City, which are Hunters, Titans, and Warlocks. While using the light, a power that gives Guardians their strength and life, the main goal is to defeat the alien enemies and protect the Last City of Earth.

“Destiny 2” came out with a brand new plot that interested players. Dominus Ghaul,  leader of the Red Legion, infiltrates the Last City and forces all humans and Guardians to evacuate. He also strips the light away from the Traveler, the source of the Guardians light. With Ghaul attempting to learn how to yield the light for his own use, while also threatening to destroy the sun, it’s up to the Guardians to come together and defeat him.

Though the game was very similar to the original, most of the changes that were made to “Destiny 2” were good. The plot in the first game was pretty random and short, however the new campaign was creative and enjoyable to play.

They also added some new areas to explore, including moons Titan and Io, the planet Nessus, and the Farm, a social area that acted as a replacement for the Last City before defeating Ghual in the campaign.

Some of the new characters that were in the game made it more likable too, such as Cayde-6, a funny Hunter Guardian that helps to defeat Ghual in the campaign, and Hawthorne, a human fighter that founds the Farm and also helps to defeat Ghual.

Although some say it was a bad thing, the idea of a first person shooter, while incorporating several Role Player Game elements into the game like upgrading and customizing your Guardian, is a concept that made the first game so successful, and it’s good to know it’s still the same game.

The game did modify start missions by having players travel to the location a mission is played and then starting, instead of jumping straight into the mission. This can be annoying if the mission is far from where players spawn because it takes a while to travel to the start.

Another change many players didn’t like was that shotguns and snipers were changed to power weapons, instead of secondary weapons. Since both these weapons were both big aspects of the Crucible, or player vs player mode, it’s a disappointment that they can’t be used in the same way, since power weapons run out of ammo quickly and can’t be used often.

Overall, while it can be repetitive, it’s a fun game that almost any kind of player can learn to enjoy, and definitely get their money’s worth while playing it.

8/10
