Two Steinbrenner students played with their band, Favorite Habit at Skipper’s Smokehouse on Saturday, August 26.

Favorite Habit includes five students, two of whom attend Steinbrenner. Freshman Travis Peacock plays guitar, and Sophomore Marlee Wittner is the lead singer. The remaining three go to other schools in the county.

The band is managed by the Jim Chambers Music Box, an academy that teaches a variety of instruments, as well as specializing in band formation. Other bands the company has created include Sick Hot and Heroes for Hire both of which performed at Skipper’s with Favorite Habit.

Favorite Habit is fairly new, forming in June of 2017. They played their first gig over the summer at Bucket’s Tavern and Tap in Tampa, and their second at Skipper’s Smokehouse.

The band members nominate songs they’re interested in playing and their director helps them pick, assisting in forming the new group’s sound.

Their set on Saturday was a blend of newer pop songs, like “Locked Out of Heaven” by Bruno Mars and “Hard Times” by Paramore, and golden oldies such as “Uptown Girl” by Billy Joel and “Should I Stay or Should I Go” by The Clash.

Each song not only had great vocals, but amazing instrumentals to keep the crowd enticed, especially with such a strong drummer. The energy from Wittner was infectious, keeping viewers at the stage from start to finish of their performance, despite the rain.

Not only does being in a band help with musical experience, but socially, it can be a great outlet.

“The bond that I’ve made with other kids in my band is really great; they’re all really cool people. I love to sing, I love to perform,” said Sophomore Marlee Wittner.
