The Steinbrenner Robotics and Science Clubs landed an amazing first impression for the Warriors, snatching a first place victory at a robotics competition this January. Under the supervision of teacher Michelle James-Yarish, the sponsor of the Science Honors Society, Josh Oldenburg, Ben Gorman, Grant Galloway, and Garrett Oehlerking created a remote controlled robot from scratch. Everything from the physical structure of the robot to the coding was created by the team, who then took the robot to Wharton High School to battle other schools in one-versus-one capture-the-flag style matches.
“It’s quiet compared to a sporting game, but I don’t think I’ve ever been more stressed,” said Oldenburg, “no one managed to score any points against us, but Lennard was a struggle… they managed to wedge something in our wheels and take the treads off, so we had to limp back to a repair crew.”
No one was more surprised than the Steinbrenner team when the winner was announced, Josh and Grant agreed.
“It was surprising because it was our first time and we, by some stroke of luck, managed to outdo people that had previously always won the competition, like Lennard and Wharton.” said Oldenburg.
However, this win isn’t the end of it for Yarish’s team. A follow-up competition will be occurring in the Steinbrenner gymnasium, where this time, the Steinbrenner team will be paired up with another school to battle their way to victory. March 25th.
