Multiple rumors have been spread, yet there is one that has always been around. And it is that Steinbrenner High School does not take care of its environment, by throwing away all trash- recyclable or not- into the dumpster. This is simply not true.

“The recycling truck comes on a regular basis… I think a lot of people don’t think that we do because they don’t see a lot of separation done in front of them,”said principal Kelly King.

Another part of the reason so many students claim Steinbrenner doesn’t care about its waste is because the companies that collect the garbage only need 70-80% of reusable waste in the can, then the rest is separated at the plant. This may confuse many students because they see all of the trash just thrown into one giant truck. This rumor also may have been started because of all the media that surrounds the topic ‘public schools don’t recycle so start a change’ idea. If you see ads on television, such as on Disney channel and Nickelodeon, you’ll see plenty of advertisements that they want students to save the planet, but our school has already taken these actions before the students saw these commercials. Started by false assumption by students, our school has had a recycling truck come more than once a week to take away all the papers and reusable waste to their plantation.

After speaking to King, she has definitely cleared up these false accusations. Not only do we have custodians that take care of our waste, but we also have students that volunteer for community service hours and help with our recyclables.

All in all, Steinbrenner is an Earth-friendly school that takes care of our planet.
