The Echo’s third annual Poetry Cafe was held in the media center and witnessed a huge turnout, with around 200 people to clap and snap along to the amazing songs and spoken word performed by the students and teachers here at Steinbrenner.  Some performing with more serious and sad tones and others being funny and entertaining, but all having positive responses from the crowd.

MC’d by Ashton Tejeda, the Poetry Cafe was a success, being the largest of the poetry cafe events the Echo has held, raising $400 for the Echo publication and their next issue. There were about 25 students and teachers that signed up for the event, Angelo casino, Luke Slove, Belize Mimcuoglu, Haleigh Gaw,  Julie Jacques, Lara Anid, Evan Alperste, Anthony Campbell and many more.

“It was interesting because it was a large amount of people sharing things that they normally wouldn’t share with others,” said Perdita Lopez. “It was exhilarating to go on stage and do something so close to my heart and know that there was no judgement.”

There were so many poets singers signed up to perform that the 3 hour event wasn’t enough time to allow all of the performances to be shown. The Echo staff handled it well, giving awards to those who’d not gotten a chance on the stage.

The Poetry Cafe seemed to have nothing but good responses from the audience and many talking about the great performances that had stuck with them through the night. With these positive responses the Echo might need more chairs next year.
