The Humane Society of Tampa Bay is a local shelter for homeless dogs and cats in need of adoption. This is a non-profit organization that does not take animals they feel they cannot take care of. This meaning if there is not enough resources, such as food, they cannot accept any more animals.

Steinbrenner’s National Honor Society is hosting ‘Pals for Paws’, a donation drive to collect resources for these animals at The Humane Society of Tampa Bay. This will be held from the beginning of March after the ‘Jeans for Teens’ drive ends through early April.  Every student is welcome to donate any pet food, toys, treats, cleaning products, necessities, and office supplies.

“Our goal is to give them as much food and supplies needed. My [dog] Ellie May  is adopted and so I have a very sweet spot in my heart for animals. I think it is very important that we help animals,” said teacher Beverley Jarrett, the sponsor of the Steinbrenner chapter of the National Honor Society.

The National Honor Society has helped this cause for five years before and now plans to alternate between last year’s ‘OASIS’ (Outreach Assisting Students in Schools) donation drive to help other Hillsborough County students in need and Pals for Paws.

The Humane Society’s mission is “Dedicated to ending animal homelessness and providing care and comfort for companion animals in need,” according to their official website. They are a “No Kill for Space” sanctuary meaning they won’t put down an animal to take in another animal have a certain time period. The Society will even sometimes take in animals with a chance of being put down if they have the resources to take care of them.

“We at The Humane Society of Tampa Bay do our best to find homes for as many animals as possible. We are committed to a community approach to help lower the euthanasia in our county. We have an aggressive transfer program which takes in animals from other shelters that are open admission and house animals that are at risk of being euthanized,” said The Humane Society of Tampa Bay mission statement.
