Undertale, if you don’t already know, is a game where you play as a human child and fall down the rabbit hole and end up where all the monsters are. The problem is that there was a war between humans and monsters, and the monsters lost so they kind of hate every single human. Sounds like a kid’s tale, huh? While the premise of the story sounds a bit childish, it’s far from it.
The end goal of the game is to find a way home. Toby Foxx, the creator of Undertale, has been so generous in including three routes to play this game, in order to make decisions factor in greatly. This also enables the player to have more gameplay experience if they so choose. Certain game elements are heavily influenced by the Nintendo game series Earthbound, but don’t sweat it if that particular game style isn’t your forte. Undertale has many different aspects as well.
Some features that I personally enjoyed within the game are unique gameplay, an amazing soundtrack, beautiful environments, superb characters, and quirky humor. As I mentioned before, some gameplay elements resemble that of Earthbound, but it also has an extremely unique twist and I personally loved it. It didn’t feel as if you were just spamming a button over and over in order to advance in the game. The soundtracks always aligned with the mood perfectly which brought such a great feeling that pumped me up and motivated me to play more and more. Foxx’s world of the Underground gave off the right vibes through the different colored environments and I absolutely loved it. The game is also very trope-y with the characters, and it’s actually awesome because that, and the weird humor that is obviously targeted at a specific group, brings spectacular comedic effect to the game.

In my opinion, I feel like Undertale was overhyped but still worth playing. That’s probably just because it was literally everywhere for the first two solid months after its release, which is a shame. However, I’m glad that it’s reaching to such a large and wide audience because the message behind the game is so good for everyone to hear. Undertale is actually quite inspiring if a certain route is taken and I’m so happy that people are being exposed to it.
All in all, I love Undertale. Despite it being a bit overhyped, I’m extremely okay with such a large crowd being drawn in for the game.
