Art teacher Ellison Miller’s art club is currently in the process of constructing a statue, or an interpretative piece rather for the Doodad Competition, which focuses on creating a message through repurposed items. Last year, Steinbrenner’s statue won “best repurposed”. While it may not have been the top prize, it definitely set expectations high for this year.
Senior Rachel Duffen is in charge of the project and has high hopes for their piece this year. The project is not finished, however the sculptures are expected to be sent to competition on May 1, so it’s not far off from completion. Their inspiration for the project came from Duffen’s work with service dogs.
“I just finished training a service dog and he got canine good citizen certified so I know I want to do something because now service dogs aren’t allowed in classes without consent of the school district,” said Duffen. “I just wanted to give my feelings through sculpture about that.”
The statue depicts a veteran with his service dog, and the entire piece is made out of items like water bottles and mardi gras beads. This may sound confusing, but each year the Doodad Competition challenges students to make their projects with specific items included. Last year it was cigar boxes and this year participants must use mardi gras beads and water bottles.
If Steinbrenner wins they will receive a cash reward, name recognition and the statue will be shown in a museum for a designated period of time.
