The measure of a school’s greatness can be calculated in a number of different ways, whether it’s academic achievement or athletic prowess. Sometimes it can be additions such as a possible new rubber track.

“We still have to work out contracts and timelines,” said principal Kelly King, “but once we get those pieces worked out, we can move forward with it.”

Track and field member, senior Chanel Marchena takes the lead in this particular race against King High School. With administration still weighing their options as to whether or not to install a new rubber track, pre-exisitng and even graduating team members are nonetheless excited.

King wanted it to be stressed that it still isn’t concrete, but that it is quite close thanks to the help of Coach Robert Ennis and Coach Lad Baldwin. Both coaches have been instrumental in what they describe as a project to help not only their own boys’ and girls’ track teams respectively, but to assist all sports at school.

“It’s across the board and will help all sports,” said Ennis.

“Cheerleaders, football players, any sport that does preseason training or practice on the track from baseball to soccer will have a better surface for workouts.”

Baldwin previously worked at Gaither High School and has seen firsthand how having a rubber track helps athletics but also assists school spirit.

“When I was working at Gaither, we were the first school in the county to get a rubber track. When it was built, it created a beautiful stadium for the students and everyone just felt like we had a much nicer looking school.,” said Baldwin.

All involved are hopeful arrangements can be made so work could begin over summer, but legal business issues still need to be coordinated.
