Steinbrenner’s varsity and junior varsity girls cross country team took home third place over all at the West Hillsborough Invitational Wednesday night.

“We started off and I got close to the front, and then there was a rain shower. I tried to keep my position, and I was in sixth the whole time, but then I passed a girl at the end,” said senior and varsity runner Morgan Sheer who came in fourth with a time of 22:02.01. While the JV team had a total of 28 runners the varsity had a total of 5 girls. Out of 61 girls racing the five girls took 4th, 5th, 17th, 18th, and 22nd place. The girls had a total score of 66 points, 23 points behind the first place winner; Academy of the Holy Names. Sheer’s personal record is 21:36 which is is just over a minute behind her time from the race. Her goal like many runners is to shave as much time off her personal record.

The JV girls also put on an impressive performance with a final score of  59 points 20 points away from first. The fastest JV girl of the night was sophomore, Claire Morrison with a time of 24:27.03 who came in fifth place. A second behind her was senior Golda Shaw who arrived to the race late and jumped in 40 seconds after everyone had already started running.

” We want to improve every week  and we definitely want the girls to see that hard work  leads to success,” said coach, Richard Baldwin. He is expecting some of his top runners to improve on their abilities but, as far as the season goes Baldwin wants to get the girls through district, regionals, and states. The next girls cross country meet will be on September 20th.
