Alonso (1-1) took down the visiting Steinbrenner Warriors (0-1) 17-14 in Friday night’s exciting game.
The Warriors attempted to rally back from a 10-0 deficit as Steinbrenner senior quarterback, Quentin Poteralski threw for 158 yards, 55 of which were seen when senior Cody Burgess ran over half the field after making a wide open reception to score a game changing touchdown during the second quarter. Missing the extra point made the score 10-6 in Alonso’s favor. Steinbrenner couldn’t find room to score in the midst of an aggressive second half anymore.
That changed however when Poteralski managed to carry his team down the field with a couple of long throws setting up their running back, Jayquese Dantley for a three yard rushing touchdown with 30 seconds left in the game. Forcing the Warriors to line up for an onside kick after making the score 17-14 by scoring a 2-point conversion, the Ravens anticipated the kickoff and set themselves up for a recovery of the ball and a couple kneels on offense to end the game with the Warriors heartbroken.
In the end, the touchdown and long passes just weren’t enough to get them the win they needed, but somewhere in the midst of things, Steinbrenner’s head coach, Andres Perez had something other than a loss on his mind. More so, a sense of optimism.
“You have to use every single game that we play until our districts as an opportunity for us to get better,” said Andres Perez-Reinaldo. “Our season really starts week four when we strap it up against Sickles.”
The Warriors will try to redeem themselves in their upcoming match against Spoto High School (2-0) on Friday night, the 12th.
