Taking place during both March 27 and 28 students were inducted into the Guanica chapter of the Spanish Honor Society, whose purpose is to promote the Spanish language and culture. The club is sponsored by two of the school’s Spanish teachers, Joann Simms and Aimee Ponce.
“It’s important to stretch our minds, get to know people from other countries and strive for higher ideals,” said Simms. “[We want] to raise the level of awareness that language is important.”
Both Simms and Ponce are excited for this year’s club chapter which has 48 members; last year, in their first year of existence, the club only had 15 members.
New inductees had to be recommend by their respective Spanish teachers, as well as have high grades throughout all their classes. While working as tutors for struggling students** and planning to do Relay for Life, the members involved in the club will also take trips to different cultural exhibits like the Dali Museum.
**If you need some extra help in your Spanish class, be sure to talk to Ms. Simms or Ms. Ponce to get paired with a Spanish Honor Society tutor.
