LUTZ- One at-bat was all that was needed for Steinbrenner (5-1) to pitch their way through Gaither (2-2) Tuesday night 2-0.
Senior Mijon Cummings had a rare yet solid at bat in the bottom of the first inning as he hit Senior Kevin Merrill home with a deep ball to center field in Tuesday’s game. From there, it was the Brennan Garcia show.
Striking out three, allowing three hits, and only walking four in six innings, Garcia was able to pace the Warriors from the mound. He only faced trouble once in the top of the fourth, runners at first and third with one out. But Cummings saved Garcia with a big catch on a line drive to third, doubling off the runner from first in the process.
“As a team, we are focusing more. We aren’t taking anything for granted and we are getting a lot more done before the games” said Garcia.
From there it was smooth sailing until the top of the seventh, when Garcia walked one, and began to fatigue. Head coach
John Crumbley made a call to the Warrior bullpen and brought in Freedom transfer, junior Ryan Fatzinger to finish the game.
“I was feeling really confident and I have a great defense behind me. I knew as long as I put the ball in the correct spot, they would do the rest” said Fatzinger.
Fatzinger silenced the Cowboys with two consecutive strikeouts. Garcia (3-0) got the win while Fatzinger claimed his first save.
