Tampa- A two run double was all that was needed to keep Steinbrenner (2-0) ahead of Wharton (1-1) in Monday night’s makeup game. The rest was just cushioning in Steinbrenner’s 9-0 victory.
“When we start hitting, the rest just follows easily for everyone else” said senior Brennan Garcia.
Garcia continues to be the role model the Warriors are looking for to fill up the holes from last year’s graduating seniors. He went three for four, all doubles, driving in the first two runs of the game on his first at bat.
Garcia did not win the game on his own, as juniors dominated the hill throwing a combined no hitter. Brandon Johnson threw four near perfect innings claiming his first ever win as a Warrior. In the fifth inning, Ryan Fatzinger came in in relief to ensure Wharton was kept silent, setting the stage for Andrew Lindsay to finish the game strong in the seventh.
“It feels great to come out here and pitch, do my thing, and help my team win” said Johnson. “But I couldn’t have done it without my defense. I love them and they always have my back.”
Senior Cole Gordon put the game far out of reach in the fifth by smacking a ball deep over center field for a grand slam, Gordon leads the squad with two home runs and eight RBI’s.
“Stats come and go. We won the game and it’s more important to help out the team rather than caring about how many home runs or RBI’s I have. It was just nice to be able to get a hit and help out my team” said Gordon. Gordon was one for four, striking out twice and popping out once.
Garcia will look to secure the win on the mound Tuesday night at 7 for the Warriors as they battle the Sickles Gryphons at Steinbrenner Field.
