Steinbrenner swim placed lower than they believed they could have achieve at districts this past week; the boys came in third place with a score of 220 while the girls came in fifth with a score of 202.
“As a team I think we did pretty well.” Said senior boys captain Austin Childers, “going into the race I just wanted to set the bar high for us,” said senior captain Austin Childers. The boys swim team suffered the loss of the three Hazlett brothers,who helped Childers set the record for the 400 free style, which they were going to swim if they had not left the team before the meet. Childers was able to still swim the relay with other boys and all though they didn’t place where they wanted to, they were still able to come in fifth.
“Individually I could have done better, but is all with the aspect of the sport,” said Childers “you just have to go in with the head of wanting to be first, and you can’t go in not wanting to be last.” Along with the 400 free style Childers competed in three other races and received more points than any other individual boys swimmer.
It wasn’t just the boy’s team that was slightly off their game, the girl’s team had 340 points separating them from first place.
“I was not happy with my swims,” said sophomore Ashley Kubel, who swam four races, “I was seated to win both of my events and I wasn’t really happy with my times.” In the 200 free style Kubel came in fifth overall and in the 100 free style she placed in sixth, neither one of these times surpassing her personal records. Like Childers, Kubel was the top scorer for the girls team at Districts.
“Hopefully I can squeeze into regional’s and get a second chance,” said Kubel. Childers is also in the mix for a potential regionals appearance.
