The All-State audition process has officially started. However, there are some major differences between this year’s auditions compared to last year. Due to the events of last year the students were required to submit a video of them singing for their audition instead of standing in person.

Four of the Steinbrenner students passed their auditions to get into the Florida All-State Honor choir. The kids who made it into the choir passed through a series of auditions including a sight. Song and theory test. As an honor choir the students are tested on a four-section grading scale, at the highest, superior. The choir is extremely hard to get into and Steinbrenner was lucky enough to have four kids make it past their first round of auditions.

“Since it was online the auditions where a lot harder and I felt like they didn’t hear me,” said Sophomore Tabatha Ponce.

The All-state auditions were quite different this year compared to last year. The kids who made it into the 2020 honor choir only had to pass one audition to get into. The student had to perform a part of a song in front of a judge while they were graded for accuracy. The Florida All county association usually do their auditions this way. This year the students must pass three sections, a singing, sight reading and musical theory test. Each performer will be given a certain score from the judge that helps to decide if they made it to the next round or not.

“This year was an in-person audition which was much easier and a lot less stressful,” said Ponce.

Students typically have a preferred way to audition, especially when they are used to it. When the world suddenly changes, and the students cannot keep things the same as they were, it can make things a lot more difficult it had been in past years.

“Almost no one made it into the choir,” stated Ponce.

Despite this 2021 has brought back the old audition process and students are super excited about the challenge this year will bring as far as the other two tests they must pass.
