The 2021-2022 school year has started off to a crowded beginning. Last year wasn’t nearly as full of students, due to online schooling caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. But now that this isn’t a given option anymore, everyone has returned to campus. One of the most noticeable increases is in the freshmen class.
The number of freshmen walking through the hallways and crowding classrooms is remarkably high, and the large numbers don’t seem to be bringing any benefit to the school. Students have all expressed their different opinions and their answers vary.
Dana Kingery, a ninth grader here at Steinbrenner, gave her thoughts. “It’s really scary when going through the hallways and there’s like a bunch of people and I’m like trying to get through and it’s just really bad.” The fact that the halls are very cramped shows that people are uncomfortable physically, but a lot of others are also feeling distressed mentally.
Other new freshmen might also be feeling this way. And of course, this problem affects teachers who teach the freshmen class greatly as well.
Ms. Wilson, a ninth grade Honors English teacher was asked her opinion on the number of freshmen, and she seemed immensely concerned.
“Because of the levels of students, that they’re not going to get everything that they need, that their needs aren’t going to be met, and that we’re not going to reach the students that we need to reach,” said Ms. Wilson.
But the number of students also brings out benefits to the population at Steinbrenner. The large amount of freshmen at Steinbrenner does help to bring out the diversity we need in our school.
“I get to meet a lot of different type of students, and I appreciate that. I do like that,” said Wilson, “I like when there’s a community of students.”
