Carter “Liv” Mogridge is a senior at Steinbrenner as well as a division 1 committed volleyball player on the school’s varsity team. Mogridge has been playing volleyball since she was eleven, making this her sixth season playing the sport.
Mogridge has been committed to playing Division 1 as a middle blocker for the University of North Carolina since before she came to Steinbrenner last year. She’s looking forward to many aspects of playing for them, including gear that D1 athletes get and the coaches she’ll get to work with. The thing about playing D1 she’s looking forward to the most is the idea of holding the title of college athlete. “I’ve said I’ve wanted that for so long and now it almost seems real,” said Mogridge.
Although she only transferred to the Steinbrenner team last year and has only been with Steinbrenner’s team for two seasons, Mogridge has truly been an exemplary Steinbrenner athlete and student.
“Liv’s really new to the program but she very much so bought into the philosophies and the standards that we were trying to build here at Steinbrenner as a blossoming program,” said Steinbrenner’s varsity volleyball coach Sabrina Shoemaker.
Mogridge has been an asset to the team and has truly managed to bond with her teammates during her time here. Coach Shoemaker recalled that during her first year playing in the Steinbrenner team, the varsity squad was mostly upper classmen. With eight seniors, and only one freshman, Mogridge helped in bringing said freshman out of her shell and assisted with incorporating her into the team, despite being new herself. This year, the varsity team has a remarkably high number of freshmen, and Mogridge has also helped with integrating them into the team.
“We have three freshmen on varsity, one of which is her little sister, and they have dreamt about playing together for years. I think the pure excitement of getting to play with her sister has made her a great support for all of our freshmen, both JV and varsity,” said Coach Shoemaker.
Mogridge is clearly appreciated by her teammates and coach. Coach Shoemaker also said, “[Liv’s] a tremendously talented and hardworking athlete and, with that said, her best quality is still her as a person. She’s got great energy, she’s super caring, really genuine, [and] she takes time to really learn about her teammates. She gets excited about things, both about and outside of volleyball. She’s an asset in so many ways to our team.”
With a gift for athletics and strong personal connections with her teammates, Mogridge has shown herself to be remarkable both on and off the court, and the only thing more exciting than watching her play is waiting to see all she will accomplish. When viewing the Steinbrenner varsity volleyball team, number 15 is one to watch.
