TAMPA – In her first major meet since winning the 2A state title last season, senior Alexis Wright picked up right where she left off.
Wright, who picked up an offer from Miami last week, led the girls track team to a second place finish at the University of South Florida (USF)/George M. Steinbrenner Invitational on March 17.
“In general, I’d say a good day,” Wright, who collected the meet’s MVP award, told the Tampa Bay Times.
She collected 27 points for the Warriors to give them a boost in the standings and nearly beat her third place state time in the 300 hurdles, but fell short by seven-hundredths of a second. She also earned gold in the triple jump and 100 hurdles.
“That’s probably my third time this year running the 300 hurdles,” Wright told the Times. “I just didn’t have the opportunity; we just didn’t have the meets. I ran against amazing girls that pushed me to 45 (seconds).”
To go along with Wright’s successes, new school records were posted by a handful of athletes. In the 4×100 relay, Jessica Brewer, Taylor Thigpen, Sarah Eppler and Nicole Dorsey each shattered the previously held times.
Other fast times were turned in by Salina Garris, Melissa Stankovich, Madi Keller, Caroline Murray and Josie Econom.
The third annual meet drew more than 75 schools to the USF campus and is the largest event in Hillsborough County.
