Steinbrenner’s newspaper, yearbook and literary magazine participated in a district wide event, Florida Scholastic Press Association, a convention for student journalist across the Tampa bay area.
At the convention, students were able to participate in on the spot competitions and sessions. Students were given prompts for their assigned competition once they had arrived. These competitions were then to be judged and announced at the end of the event. Steinbrenner’s newspaper, the Oracle, won multiple awards; staff writer Cat Johnson won first place for a hand drawn illustration, News editor Taylor Snow won two all-Florida’s.
Sessions were taught by advisers and professionals in the journalism field. Journalism students also had the opportunity to teach a session. The Oracle’s very own Editor-in-Chief, Jorydn Dees, taught a session. Her session consisted of other student journalist from two different schools, Middleton high school and Hillsborough high school. These students had the opportunity to share what their publication looks like and how its run. Every student attended three sessions of their choice. The sessions varied, from how to share news through social media to how to find hidden stories on your campus. Most students take something out of every session that was valuable and apply it to their own publication.
FSPA is a learning experience for all students. However, some sessions can help lead a publication to a more successful outcome. With the help of different advisers and student journalist from different schools, ideas are shared and then taken into action.
