Every year the Super Bowl grabs the attention of America with families flocking to the TV to support their favorite teams. But in 2018 the NFL had been plagued with several controversies bringing a lot of the negative attention with it to this year’s Super Bowl. More specifically, disagreements with players like Colin Kaepernick and the diversity of their Coaches had generated a lot of buzz on social media. This resulted in the NFL taking no chances this year resulting in this year’s game being as dull and forgettable as possible.

The teams competing in this year’s Super Bowl LIII were the returning New England Patriots and the underdogs the Los Angeles Rams. The game had a promising start with each team going back and forth with the ball being seemingly even. But after each attempt at a touchdown was thwarted by each team’s strong defense and field goals were missed, the audience could tell how the rest of the game was going to play out. The first quarter had ended with both teams still tied at 0-0.

The next quarter was much of the same from the previous quarter, with several incomplete passes and interceptions. If there were any MVP on the Patriots team, it would have to be their wide receiver Julian Edelman who had made more catches in the first quarter than the entire opposing team in the first half. The Patriots were able to land a field goal and steal the lead ending the quarter at 3-0.

After the end of the second quarter, the half time show started that featured artists Maroon 5, Travis Scott, and Big Boi. The bands performances were pretty bland and forgettable compared to the previous half time shows. Maroon 5 played a bunch of their old hits, and the NFL teased the highly anticipated “Sweet Sweet Victory” from Spongebob, but viewers were disappointed to find it was only a transition to Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode.” This year’s half time show had only served a brief intermission in between a very lackluster game.

The third quarter had some closer calls, but ultimately the stalemate between the teams had continued. Rams had kept pushing closer and closer to the end zone until finally, they were able to score a field goal tying up the game at 3-3 at the end of the third quarter.

In the final quarter, the game had finally picked up the action with the Patriots scoring the first and only touchdown of the night. The Rams were tired out at this point, and the Patriots played it to their advantage as they secured the win with another field goal towards the end of the quarter. The Patriots had then ended the game with a score of 13-3.

So all in all the game was not memorable, and by the next year, most NFL fans will have already forgotten it. Hopefully, next year we will get a more exciting game that they’ll remember for years to come.
