Steinbrenner’s sports marketing club, DECA, competed at their district competition on Nov. 28 at the Keisher University campus. The event consisted of various contests between students from different schools.

Getting ready for the event was a lengthy process for the students in DECA. The competition required months of preparation and hard work on the students’ parts.

“It was a great experience, it taught me a lot about business and all of the different things that go into owning and running a business,” said senior Bret Delgiorno. Delgiorno participated in the Entrepreneurship Team Decision Making competition, and his team won second place.

DECA competitions tend to be very centered around teamwork and having the ability to think on the spot. Most of the students that attended participated in on- the-spot competitions which consist of completing tasks with only the time given during the contest.

“The on the spot competitions were very nerve racking but exciting at the same time. I think we were very prepared for them so it wasn’t that bad,” said sophomore Mykayla King. She competed in the Travel and Tourism in the Hospitality Branch competition and placed third.

An award ceremony took place on Nov. 30, two days after the initial competition. Many DECA students brought home awards; of all of the those that represented Steinbrenner, there were 40 students that made the top three and 35 that made first or second. Students that placed will go on to compete at their state competition which will be held sometime next year.
