On Feb. 10, Steinbrenner’s colorguard team attended a competition at Freedom. The team came in after being moved up a division in order to compete with higher level teams and have a bigger challenge.  Previously, the team placed first in every competition, not challenging themselves as much and winning easily over all other schools.

“In our new division we were up against nine other talented high schools, yet due to a combination of nervousness and it being a more challenging competition, we sadly ended up getting last place. I know as a whole we didn’t do that well,” said senior Casey Foreman.

This is the first major competition for colorguard, as the previous were practice. The first competitions of the year are usually the most nervewracking, and that was true for colorguard.

“Personally I think that my run was pretty strong, but as whole color guard team I don’t think it was the best we could have done. I definitely think our performance needs to be improved on to get a better score,” said junior Alyson Ribble.

The team had a lot of critique for themselves. They understood they were very nervous about the performance, but that they need to work on their energy overall. Improved attitude, drama, and catches will improve their showmanship and draw the audience in. The colorguard also has a fast and upbeat routine, which doesn’t appeal as much to the judges, so they have to work even more to appeal to the judges.

“Sadly, we placed ninth place out of nine, although we still did a lot better than we expected. It looked like we weren’t sure what we were doing, but we were only three points behind eighth place,” said senior Meghan Felice.

The routine wasn’t perfected exactly in time for the competition, so after the addition of more movements and exact synchronization, the next competition should be stronger. The team is hoping to jump up a few places, and get to sixth place.

“It was a weak competition for us, but we’re hoping to redeem ourselves in our upcoming competition at Riverview,” said Foreman.
