On Jan. 31, the Steinbrenner Boys Basketball team faced the Alonso Ravens in a fight to win the Boys Varsity Basketball Senior Night Game. While Steinbrenner did not win, the team was still able to make their Senior Night meaningful.
The beginning of the game started well for the Steinbrenner Warriors. For the majority of the first quarter, the Warriors were able to prevent Alonso from scoring many points. However, the Alonso Ravens made a comeback in the second quarter. By the end of the first half, the score was tied 20-20.
In the second half, the Warriors began to lose control, and allowed the Ravens to score many points. While the game seemingly slipped away from the team in this quarter, it still provided a great opportunity for the players to show off their talents. Among these were junior Angelo Sardegna, who averages 13 points per game.
A few other players moved up from the Junior Varisty squad to play on the Varsity team. These athletes were important additions to the team, especially since the team is losing three seniors.
In the end, the Steinbrenner Warriors lost 61-43. Although the game ended in a loss, it was an important game for the Warriors. The reason being is that the team celebrated their Senior Night. The three graduating seniors, Zach Johnson, Nick Tambasco, and Kaleb Williams, were each honored with their families during the halftime of the Varsity Lady Warriors game, who played before them. It was a short but nice ceremony that payed homage to these Senior Varsity Warrior’s careers, as well as their aspirations for the future.
“I’m so proud of their heart and dedication not only to Steinbrenner, but to the game of basketball! I really look forward to seeing how these kids do in the future not just in basketball, but in life! I hope they can apply some skills they’ve developed like perseverance and commitment, to their future education and life. If they do, the sky is the limit,” said Assistant Coach Matthew Moffitt.
Overall, the game was well played by all players involved. However, there is room for improvement in upcoming games.
