DECA, the business marketing leadership club at Steinbrenner competed in a district competition on Nov. 29 at Keiser University. The competition entailed an examination and a role play scenario in front of a judge, with participants receiving scores out of 100 points. DECA members from all over the county competed at the competition.
“It’s a way to apply some of the stuff they leaned at school”, said Allison Ennis, the DECA club sponsor at Steinbrenner.
The competitions are supposed to test the business and leadership qualities of a person, especially the role playing event of the competition. The way it works is the DECA members are given a scenario to respond to in a team of two. A pair that did particularly well was senior Gabriel Arzuaga and senior Mario Febre. They scored a 96 on the presentation out of a possible 100 points.
“DECA has taught me some of the most essential skills I could ever need to use in the professional world. Things like leadership, responsibility, and efficiency now play active roles in everything I do and plan to do in my future,” said Arzuaga.
Noah Vinik, a senior DECA officer and two-time district champion, led the Steinbrenner club in a victory to claim three out of the five top spots in the exam. He scored a 92 on the presentation and an 83 on the written exam. This secured his second run as district champion for this competition.
The Steinbrenner DECA team is on track to go to the state competition taking place at a Hilton Orlando hotel from March first to the fourth. Based on their success in the districts competition, they will definitely be a force to be reckoned with.
