Each year, one of the biggest school-sponsored events is homecoming. One of the goals is to make it move as smoothly as possible, and this year that means adding a limit on how many students may attend. It seemed like a daunting task for Angela Haskell of the English department. This year, she’s taken on Senate as well as her regular classes, making her in charge of selling tickets for the homecoming dance.

“The first day that tickets are being sold, which is October 12, there will be an even amount of tickets in each lunch. They will be first come first serve per lunch. So after that, then it’s anything goes,” said Haskell, “It’s eleven hundred people, including dates. Again, it’s first come first serve, so if someone wants to buy a ticket [for their date], then they will have to buy their ticket at the same time they’re buying their own.”

This means a little under half the school will be able to attend. With only so many people allowed to go, it seems like that will be a factor impacting the overall interest in attending the dance.

“There are a lot of people going, but I don’t know if there will be enough tickets for everyone,” said freshman Sohan Khanvilkar, a member of Senate in charge of sorting through ticket applications, “I’d recommend a bigger space that could hold everyone.” He currently plans on attending the homecoming dance.

“I’m not going because I already went to one and I don’t want to take the spot away from someone else since it’s so limited,” said junior Ashley Hegwood, in contrast.

However, the limit is not without good reason. The administration decided on a specific number so that the dance wouldn’t break the fire code of the USF Marshall Center.

“I would just say they’re only limited the number of tickets this year because of the fire code. It is more for safety than anything else,” said Haskell. It may have been too late to change the location of the dance, but maybe more will be able to attend for next year, as Haskell and Khanvilkar both expect the tickets to sell out very fast.

Tickets for homecoming are sold Oct. 12 and 13, as well as 16 and 17. The homecoming dance will take place at the USF Marshall Center on Oct. 21.
