On February 16 to the 19, the Model UN club attended the annual NAIMUN convention in Washington D.C. This year was the fifty-fourth year that the program has been around, and was attended by over 3,000 high school students, some being international. There, students got to simulate what it’s like to work on United Nations committees. Each committee is assigned a certain topic to discuss. The goal of of each committee is to pass a resolution that essentially solves the problem that the topic brings fourth.
“It was an amazing experience. I was in DISEC which is the Disarmament and International Security committee. It really shows how hard it is to pass amendments because everyone is striving for personal growth which may or may not help the overall growth on what you’re debating,” said Senior Sarah Frost.
The committees included the United States Senate, the United Nations Security Council, the International Committee of the Red Cross and Red Crescent as well as 36 other organizations.
“One of the coolest things about the trip is that students get to connect with students from not only other states, but from other countries that come to do the same thing which is address a global issue and represent a country,” said Kelly Miliziano, a social studies teacher and Model UN club sponsor.
