In the 1950s, not every woman wanted to wear pearls and tend to her husbands every needs. Many didn’t like the traditional role that society had expected them to fulfill. In 1963, Betty Friedan published The Feminine Mystique which gave birth to a new feminist movement. In ’66, Friedan formed an activist group called the National Organization for Women which was dedicated to the “full participation of women in mainstream American society” (now.org). They demanded equal pay for equal work, and pressured the government to support and enforce legislation that prohibited gender discrimination. By the end of the decade, feminism had developed a radical faction.
The word “sexism” entered the American vocabulary as women became categorized as a target group for discrimination. The feminist movement compelled many women to confront social, political, and economic barriers that had yet to be touched.
In recent years, feminism has lost sight of its true goal; equality between the sexes. It’s almost as if considering yourself as a feminist has become a new trend. The real reasons for the movement have been washed out over the years with reasons that are no longer relevant in today’s society, making the term feminism outdated. It has gotten to the point where certain individuals have sectioned themselves apart from the modern feminist group and formed their own stance on the issue.
“Modern feminism is a disjointed concept now. Instead of focusing to unite together, and fight for equal rights for all women; each of these different groups are focusing on themselves,” said Editor in Chief of the Oracle, Joey Menendez .
There are women in this world who refuse to call themselves a feminist because of extremists in the movement that they do not wish to be associated with. Additionally, some feel that being a female and stating they are not a feminist causes their opinion to be automatically shamed or devalued for not supporting the movement. Many of these issues could be solved by re-configuring the modern feminist movement by unifying all genders and views.
“It would be smart to create a new movement that is more focused on both genders instead of focusing on one gender only,” said Staff Writer, Jack Comiskey.
In the past, the feminist movement worked because the genders were far out of balance, but since then gender equality is prevalent. The women’s movement in the past accomplished so many things, so a sole women’s rights group is no longer necessary. A movement that focuses on both genders and their issues alike would have much more balance within itself.
“I think a movement that focuses on the whole idea of gender equality and both sexes would be seen in a better image. It wouldn’t be a power struggle, but more as an equality movement. We should start over and start a new movement with new goals and unify it,” said Comiskey.
Most people see the extremist side and feel threatened by feminism, but with a movement that is more focused on both sides, people would not see these extremists from one gender or feel threatened. This kind of movement would become more inclusive of everyone.

The feminist movement is in a current state of disarray. While it may have started out as an influential and positive movement in history, it has now become more and more distant from its roots. It has led to many divisions of the same belief (Haight) and the rise of the satirical movement of meninism (Hindle). The movement needs to become more centered and organized around specific issues that is a common problem for all women, and become more unified if it is going to have any impact and significance in society.
In the 3 documents, the authors provide the reader with the current state of the feminist movement. The main goal of feminist movement nowadays is to stop discrimination and prejudice. Subgoals include closing the wage gap and finalizing reproductive rights (Johnstone). In her essay, Hindle describes how in the modern era, the feminist movement can be taken as a joke. There has even been the creation of a joke”meninism movement”. The movement should adapt for the future by starting over and setting new goals that will benefit everyone in today’s society.
The current state of feminism is that people over the years truly have forgotten the full meanin of what feminism is and how it affects the society as a whole. It has gotten to the point where individuals have secreted themselves apart from the social norm for feminism and have formed their own stance/have applied their own opinions on feminism. The moment should adapt for the future because it will not only bring us more together as a family but the country itself could be a better place for everyone. With a movement that’s focused on feminism people would see this discrimination against women and would become more involved in the movement to help spread the word of feminism and how it should be changed throughout the world
From the 3 texts provided, it is shown that the current state of the feminist movement is based on ending the wage gap, finalizing reproductive rights, and stopping discrimination(Johnston). Some have taken the feminist movement as a joke, taking it to an extent where men have created a “meninism movement” as a joke(Hindle). It also has been stated that the word feminism has become “outdated” due to its fading relevance of society’s problems today. The movement should adapt for the future by starting over and setting new goals that will benefit everyone in today’s society
The current state of the feminist movement is becoming skewed because of the many extremists. Many women today do not want to consider themselves feminist because of these extremists and it’s overall harming the movement. The movement is relevant today in closing the wage gap and giving women the right to decide what they want to do with their pregnancies. In the future, feminists should focus on these two focal points so women in the US can be equal. Once the goals are met in the US, feminists should extend the movement to different countries so every woman can truly live an equal life.
The current state of modern feminism is the fight for the end of the wage gap, final reproductive rights, and stopping social violence and discrimination against women today (Johnston). I do not perceive modern feminism in a positive light as many groups are too extreme and don’t focus on becoming equal with men but surpassing them. Genders are not that far off from being equal and the constant put down of all men is unnessacary. Women in the past have accomplished many things without condemning the other gender and becoming too extreme. Instead of sitting around and demanding for equal rights women need to stand up and prove that they are just as smart, hard working & determined as men.
