Last Wednesday night  Steinbrenner’s swim team competed at a triple meet against Bishop and Alonso High School. It was their first meet of the season and Steinbrenner took first place for both the boys and the girls. Steinbrenner smoked their competition 163-66-61 for the girls and 165-69-36 for the boys.

“I think we did really good for our first meet of the season…It really shows how the rest of the season is going to be and I think we have a lot to look forward to and a lot of potential in the season,”said senior Elijah Moothedan. This is his fourth and final year on the team, but has been competing competitively for 10 years. He specializes in butterfly and IM, while in this meet he swam the 200 IM. “I think I focused more on my technique and how I swam tonight,” said Moothedan. He felt this meet was a good practice for future meets and looks forward to their meets against Plant and Jesuit.

“I think I got a couple personal bests tonight,”said sophomore Emma Scarlatella. She recently traded in gymnastics for swimming, this being her first year on the team. She had a good experience this meet and was really happy with the end results. Scarlatella swam the 50 free and 100 breaststroke. “I really liked competing with the other teams,” said Scarlatella.

“It was really fun, I liked being with the team and cheering them on,” said freshman Max Martino. This is also Martino’s first swim meet and is satisfied by how the competition went tonight. He swam the 100 fly and 2 relays. He credits his success to all the practices and hard work the team has put in. “It felt good in the water, I felt very relaxed,” said Martino. He hopes to eventually compete in the 100 free and 50 free sometime this year.

The next meet will be August 31 in another triple meet against Wesley Chapel and Wiregrass at Hunters Green.
