The Steinbrenner Lady Warriors lacrosse team have come a long way since their introduction to varsity sports three years ago.
The Lady Warriors program has grown exponentially getting just below a .500 record their first year as a team, and have been coached by Edward Kay since the beginning of the program. They have steadily improved, going 10-2 in their second season and earning a 14-3 record this year.
They truly were able to show off their skill this year, going 7-0 in district play through all competitions. The Lady Warriors easily managed to push through district playoffs to get the district championship.
The Lady Warriors were led by team captain, and four year veteran (It was a club sport for two years before its transition into varsity sports), Morgan Ulvenes. She led the Lady Warriors with an average of 1.8 goals a game and 22 interceptions through the 17 games played throughout the season.
“It was very satisfying because all of our hard work was paying off, from before season to the practices after school,” said Ulvenes on leaving with a district championship under her belt. Since the lacrosse program only started a few years ago, many players, such as Ulvenes, had never played before they came to Steinbrenner.
“I have grown tremendously, I mean when I came freshman year I had just picked up a stick and now I’m committed to Lenor Rine University for lacrosse.” The Lady Warriors look to continue their success for years to come as they only lose three seniors to graduation this year.
The Steinbrenner boys lacrosse team has mirrored the success and growth of the girls team. They are coached by head coach John Kuebrich, and assistant coaches (as well as brothers of head coach John) Justin and Jeremy Kuebrich.
They went 8-5 in their first year as a program and have steadily improved, gaining a 9-7 record this year, going 3-3 in district play. Their offensive attack was especially potent this year as they had a +46 goal differential on the season, helping lead them to a winning streak that extended all the way to the district championship. The Warriors got second in the district, but due to this we were able to play in the district playoff and beat Sickles high school 12-2 in the district playoff.
This is the first time that both Steinbrenner teams have hoisted the District Championship trophy in the same year and continue on to regional play. Both teams have a relatively young group of skilled players and hope to continue this years tremendous success on for many years to come.
