Kelsy Holbert

Senior Kelsy Hobert has excelled since making the transition from softball to golf her freshman year, landing herself a golf scholarship to Florida Gulf Coast University.

“I have stuck with it because I love it”, said Hobert, “The best part about the sport is the friends I have made.”

Hobert explained that a match against friends is more like just hanging out and less about the competition which keeps things fun and from getting too serious. And when she isn’t playing against friends Hobert spends many hours a week practicing.

“It doesn’t matter if you have a good swing, if you don’t have the right mentality you’re in trouble”, said Hobert. She believes that working your hardest and not beating yourself up about a loss are the keys to success in her sport.

She plans to attain those goals by working hard and practicing a lot at FGCU. She chose this school because of the girls that will be on the team who she has met and of course, the loaction, Fort Myers, Florida.

“I hope to excel in college and after college I want to try and make the pro tour. If that doesn’t happen, then I want to teach golf” said Hobert. She plans to remain a golfer for the rest of her life.

Jack Frank

Jack Frank

After trying many sports at an early age, Senior Jack Frank has stuck with playing basketball since the age of five.

Frank began playing at the Y.M.C.A and joined his middle school team before commiting to Steinbrenner. Frsnk is also apart of a travel team, Team Speightts, which is run by NBA player Marreese Speights. This is where Frank was recruited/scouted for college basketball.

Frank says his biggest accomplishment is signing to play college ball. He will be a University of Tampa Spartan, attending on a full ride scholarship. Frank likes it here because it’s close to home, has good education opportunities, great facilities, and an excellent coaching staff.

“Playing at the next level means that if you work hard good things can happen, not everyone gets to do so.” said Frank. “It’s an honor.”

As far as this school year season goes, Frank would like to have a better record than last year, having 1000 points and 1000 rebounds.

He would also like to work towards having the honor of getting his jersey retired just like last years graduating Senior Keshawn Ingram.

In college, Frank hopes to play all four years and be a starter his freshman year. He also looks forward to getting away from home and living on his own.

Rachel Briere

Senior Rachel Briere signed with Embry-Riddle University, just outside of Daytona Beach for basketball.

“I’ve been playing basketball for as long as I can remember and I can’t imagine my life without it”, said Briere. Having first played in a rec league when she was just six years old, she has stuck with it.

“I’m really going to miss my Steinbrenner team next year” said Briere who has played for Steinbrenner since freshman year,“Every year we get one game farther (in playoffs) and I hope to get even farther this season.”

“The most important part of any sport is sportsmanship and working together”, said Briere. She always strives to not only be the best athlete she can be, but also the best team player. She explained that the fact that basketball is a team sport has really taught her a lot about how to work with others and about doing her part in a group.

While she hasn’t spent alot of time with the people she will be playing with, the general dynamic of the team at Embry-Riddle is one of the main reasons she signed with the team.

“I have big plans for the future” said Briere who is not just attending Embry-Riddle for the basketball, “It also has one of the best software engineering programs in the state, which is what i plan to major in”.

Lindsay Boynton

Lindsey

For Senior Lindsay Boynton, softball wasn’t the first extracurricular in her life. From ages 6 – 12 Boynton cheered and played softball, but at 12 years old she chose to stick with fast pitch softball and her talent grew from there.

Boynton has played with the Lutz Leaguerettes, Lutz Lightning, USA Patriots, and is currently still a team member of the Tampa Mustangs (who recently won the national championship) and the softball team here at Steinbrenner High.

When Boynton made her decision to sign with the Mercer University Bears, she knew it was the right place for her; she felt at home, loved the coaching style, the university has both of the major’s she’s considering, and she admired the look of the school as well. Boynton plays corners (1st and 3rd base) for Steinbrenner, and for college she’ll be playing corners in addition to outfield.

“I’m most excited about meeting new people and having a set group of friends you can always rely on that become like your new family.” said Boynton, “This is a big accomplishment because not everyone gets to play at the next level, you have to have a good work ethic towards school and softball, accomplish your goals, and really want to move on to college ball.”
