Although Steinbrenner scored goals first and last in Thursday’s event, Gaither refused to let up resulting in a 2-2 tie.

Despite a strong defensive perfromace in the first half, Steinbrenner maintained a majority field possesion. Steinbrenner scored near the end of the first half as junior midfielder Kirsten Russell, passed it off to senior midfielder Margaret Bitter, who knocked it in for a go ahead score.

However after the half, Gaither made their comeback as junior Macie Rodriguez rushed past Steinbrenner’s defense to score. Although Steinbrenner managed to hold off any more attempts before the waterbreak, the game had definitely changed. It may not have helped that right before the half, freshman Jennifer Clifford was carded with a red card for “foul” language.

Gaither followed it up with a penalty kick driven through the goal by senior Kendelle Knapp. To end the game Russell drove a curve shot straight into the goal on a corner kick. The game was tied.

“We controlled the game. We just couldn’t finish,” said head coach Sue Peet.

“We go right…We go left. we all drop as a unit, we all get up as a unit,” said senior captain Amanda Clifford. The cohesive girls soccer team will return to face Jefferson Monday, October 10 at Steinbrenner.
