Despite Homecoming being canceled due to COVID-19, the Steinbrenner High School Student Senate is determined to find alternatives to keep the tradition going as well as with making new ones and reintroducing old ones.
“We are still trying to do fun things for the students, we’ll still have a Spirit Week where every day we dress up,” Angela Haskell said.
Spirit Week themes have already been selected, the themes include Mathletes vs. Athletes Monday, Time Travel Tuesday, Country vs. Country Club Wednesday, Movie Theater Thursday and, of course, Class Color Friday. Since homecoming traditions are being done differently this year, there will not be a parade because of social distancing, rather, there will be a competition for hall decorating and each classroom will have a hall, not to mention old traditions coming back, one of which is the hype video.
“The Senate is trying really hard to keep everybody focused on school spirit, know that we are trying as hard as we can to make it successful,” Haskell said.
Furthermore, there will be a Homecoming Court event on October 14, 2020 after school.
“We’ll have a red carpet that they’ll walk, and they’ll wear their sash and all that kind of stuff, and the voting will take place normally,” Haskell said.
Homecoming Court would conventionally be crowned at the dance, but since the dance is canceled, they will be crowned at the Homecoming Court celebration. The event will be live streamed so that everybody can view it. Since only the Homecoming Court will be present, it will be aired on the jumbotron at the football game as well.
“There is a Homecoming game, but the only way you can go is if you have someone on the Steinbrenner Football Team, Cheer Team, or Band provide you with a guest pass,” Haskell said.
