The next installment, and possibly the last, of Five Nights at Freddy’s takes place in the future unlike the last title which took players back in time. From a horror game to a nightmare with a large following, the third title once again prevents players from sleeping or from stopping.
The game takes place in a horror attraction meant to educate guests into the frightening history of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. As a security guard your job is merely to watch the place over night. Of course as prior games have taught protecting any establishment associated with Freddy, the job is never that easy. This time around a new animatronic rears its head, appropriately named Snaptrap. This hybrid animatronic always appears before the game over screen. Unlike the other games there is only one animatronic that kills you and the others are merely hallucinations. These hallucinations include Phantom Balloon Boy, Phantom Marionette, Phantom Freddy, Phantom Chica, Phantom Bonnie, and Phantom Foxy. While this creates an interesting mechanic of double and even triple jump scares of disheveled animatronics, these sequences don’t actually kill you. Instead these phantom versions merely serve to disrupt your focus and draw in Snaptrap.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 is famous for giving players simple tasks to keep away the jump scares and survive the night. This time around security guards must keep their generator from malfunctioning. This involves consistently checking the ventilation, camera, and audio system to ensure they are not malfunctioning. Later on in the game these functions are limited forcing the player to choose carefully when to reboot the system. The map also has two levels: one with the rooms within the building, and the other a ventilation system schematic. Both must be checked in order to ensure Snaptrap doesn’t sneak into the ventilation or the security room. This job is made even more complicated by the appearance of the phantoms.
As for theories Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 is full of hidden content, from the expected extra night, to another feature called Aggressive Nightmare Mode, supposedly harder than 20/20 mode. The game also includes a Good and Bad ending. The bad ending found after beating all five nights and the good ending after completing select hidden mini games after each night found in the original minigames, much like those that appeared in the second game. But so far there haven’t been confirmed or even convincing secrets within the story.
Finally as for future titles Scott Cawthon recently posted a picture with a single hat in a beam of light, upon investigating the picture further no secrets, hidden images or even words are lurking within. There have many speculations as to the nature of this picture but the most accepted one is that there won’t be another game. Even the game confirms this as in the final minigame the purple man dies trapped in the Snaptrap suit. The entire purpose of the minigames in obtaining the good ending involves rescuing the animatronics souls. For all intents and purposes these are the final five nights at Freddy’s.
