Over the last three years, many of you have gotten to know me a little bit better and know how much I love Steinbrenner High School and its surrounding community. Well friends, it looks like I will be taking my love and dedication down south after this year to Estero, Florida (located just outside Ft. Myers) to Florida Gulf Coast University.
On Dec. 25, while many of you were ripping open the giftwrap, exposing that new iPhone 4s or the new laptop you dreamt of all year, I opened the one item that I actually shed tears over: My college acceptance letter.
My mother had kept her silence for days, hoping to surprise me with what is now the greatest gift I have ever received. As other seniors in my class boasted about their own futures, mine was still up in the air as I didn’t expect to ever be admitted, but that all changed on Christmas day.
For my family, my friends and my girlfriend, Rebecca, I thank each of you for all you have done for me over the past year. I am overjoyed to say that I will soar with the FGCU Eagles next fall and will finally have the opportunity to earn my degree in journalism.
Even as I say that with a smile, I know how challenging leaving the community will be. But it is a decision that is made not only for the betterment of myself now, but the future too.
While my location will change in 2012, my love for the Steinbrenner community and history I have been a part of will never waiver. From the opening day in August of 2009, to the girls soccer team winning the 4A state title in February, to present day, sitting at this computer thanking all who have helped me get to this.
I’m a proud Warrior, I always will be, but now it’s time to soar high to the next chapter of my life.
